Taal is one of the few volcanoes on earth that sits inside a lake, on an island, inside another lake. That nested geography — a crater within Volcano Island, within Taal Lake, within the collapsed caldera whose rim forms the Tagaytay Ridge — is the reason a small Cavite city of roughly 70,000 people receives visitors by the busload from a capital an hour and a half north. The ridge itself is the product of catastrophe.
